On successful completion of this module the student will be able to

• Understand and discuss the concept of managed care and its practical implications.
• Explain the theoretical concepts that underpin a managed healthcare system.
• Describe and discuss the notion of ‘responsibility’ in the context of managed healthcare.
• Explain how a positive ethical climate can be promoted as part of implementing an ethics programme in a healthcare organisation.

Essay

A* 80%+

High First

An excellent answer will have the following attributes:

• An excellent understanding and discussion of the concept of managed care and its practical implication
  • An excellent understanding of the theoretical principles that underpin managed care with useful discussions around SDG-3 and 16.
  • Exceptionally well structured and well-presented arguments
  • Correct use of English language
    • Referencing in correct Harvard Style Intensive reading of primary source drawing correct inferences
    • Extensive reading of secondary sources to be able to substantiate or contradict the arguments given in the source material
    • Exceptionally well-structured and well-presented report
    • Full reference accurately in the Harvard style of referencing.

A 70 – 79%

First Class

All components will have been submitted, and the remaining criteria will be as noted for the 80%+ marking band. However, in one or two areas, the submission will be open to minor criticism.

B 60 – 69 %

Upper Second

A very good answer will have the following attributes

• A good understanding and discussion of the concept of managed care and its practical implication
• A good understanding of the theoretical principles that underpin managed care
• Identify the challenges and provide recommendations for alternative solutions
• Clear and logical structure showing the progression of ideas and argument
  • Extensive reading of secondary sources to be able to substantiate or contradict the arguments given in the source material
  • A well-articulated and detailed argument with sound logic producing a generalized summary.
  • Full reference accurately in the Harvard style of referencing with some minor errors.
  • A well-structured and coherent work written in correct English with some minor errors

C 50 – 59%

Lower Second

All components will have been submitted, and the remaining criteria will be as noted for the 60-69% marking band. However, there will be some gaps in knowledge and analysis.

D 40 – 49%

Third Class

The answer in this band of marks will have the following attributes:

• A limited view of the concept of managed care and its practical implication
• A limited understanding of the theoretical principles that underpin managed care.
• Mainly descriptive with limited evidence of deeper understanding

• Weak structure with some mistakes in grammar or sentence structure.
  • Evidence of good but not in-depth reading of primary source. Able to drawing relevant inferences
  • Limited reading of secondary sources to be able to substantiate or contradict the arguments given in the source material
  • Lacks in articulating the key arguments to produce a generalized summary and recommendation.
  • Satisfactory data visualization and academic report writing
  • The work will have some noticeable errors in the English Language.
  • References and citation of all the sources not included

F 30 – 39%

Fail

The answer in this band of marks will have the following attributes:

• The work shows an insufficient level of factual or conceptual understanding of the subject.
  • The work is almost entirely descriptive showing little or no evidence of analysis and with unsubstantiated opinions and no application of knowledge.
  • Very limited reading comprehension of primary source
  • Very limited evidence of reading of secondary sources
  • Many mistakes in grammar or sentence construction.
  • Underdeveloped academic style of report writing
  • The references list not complete and not in the Harvard referencing

Poor Fail

• Largely inaccurate or irrelevant application
• No or little evidence of identification and knowledge of the topic
• Structure very weak or lacking.
• Many mistakes in grammar or sentence construction
• Citations and bibliography are incorrect or missing.
• The work may be incomplete or too brief.

Reflective Essay

A* 80%+

High First

An excellent answer will have the following attributes:

• Exceptionally broad factual and conceptual understanding of ‘responsibility’ in managedhealth and social care organisations and what constitutes an ethical climate.
• Exceptional assessment and evaluation of the promotion of an ethical climate in ethics programmes
• Draw meaningful inferences and produce a range of responses to tackle the organisation’s problems
• Extensive reading of primary and secondary sources •
• Exceptionally well-structured and well-presented report
• Full reference accurately in the Harvard style of referencing

A 70 – 79%

• Basic knowledge and conceptual understanding of responsibility in managed health and social care organisations and what constitutes an ethical climate.
• Basic knowledge and evaluation of the promotion of ethical climate in ethics programmes.
• Mainly descriptive work with disorganised or fragmented analysis.
• Lack of wider research
• Limited evaluation, with minimum or no reflection
• Only able to make basic recommendations not demonstrating an in-depth understanding
• The work will have some noticeable errors in the English Language.
