Review the Final Project requirements in Session 5 and choose from the following three options that will be your project for the duration of this course:
- Large Systems Implementation or IT Data Center Consolidation Project
- You will be responsible for managing the consolidation of two data centers or the implementation of a large new system or software tool (e.g. Knowledge Management, Financial Management, Marketing Management tools, etc.) at several locations across multiple departments impacting at least 2000 people.
- New Application Development Project or New Product Project
- You will be responsible for managing a project to implement a new enterprise software tool. Approximately 2000 people will use this implementation across all functional units in the organization.
- Building of a New Fighter Jet (e.g. F35) Project
- You will be responsible for managing a project to build a new fighter jet for the military across multiple military branches.
Once you have selected your project, download the Project Management Plan Template as you will be working on this throughout this course.
For Session 1, complete the following sections that will be a part of your Final Project:
- Select your project topic.
- Create a business case for the project you have selected. You may use the template provided or create your own. Create a business case for your chosen project based on the readings and templates. You may want to review this How to Draw a Business Concept Diagram for a sample of how to create your own template if you choose to do so.
- Determine and document the scope. Your scope statement should be 1-2 pages; please write this as a formal scope statement.
- Determine high-level milestones and tasks that need to be included in this project. If you like, you can use the standard milestones of Initiating/Planning, Requirements, Design, Executing/Development, Monitoring and Controlling, User Acceptance Testing (UAT), and Closing. At the very least, your high-level milestones should capture the main deliverables and/or major events to meet in your plan. You will need this for creating your WBS in the next session.
