What Is a Mental Health Case Study?
Case studies have been used in mental health education and research to enable students to learn about psychological disorders, patients’ experiences and the treatment of psychological disorders. The information presented in these case studies could be based on actual patients, but the names have been changed to protect the confidentiality of the patients, or it could be a fictional scenario created for educational purposes. Through the analysis of individual cases, students can make application of theoretical knowledge to practical situations, and develop critical thinking, assessment and decision-making skills that are needed in mental healthcare settings (American Psychiatric Association, 2022).
Mental Health Case Study Examples:
For example, the real-life story of John Nash, the Nobel Prize-winning mathematician whose experiences with schizophrenia have been written about academically and popularised in the book and film A Beautiful Mind. Nash had delusions and hallucinations for many years but eventually learned to cope with the condition and pursue further studies. Schizophrenia is often presented in this manner to illustrate the chronicity of the disease, the impact of the symptoms on the ability to function in daily life and the need for treatment and social support for recovery (American Psychiatric Association, 2022).
Elyn Saks, a legal scholar, is another famous example of a real case. Her case has sparked significant debate around mental health education, as it defies the misconceptions surrounding severe mental health disorders and the ability of people to hold down a career despite these challenges. Saks’ experiences also highlight the critical role of early intervention, medication adherence, and supportive healthcare relationships (World Health Organisation, 2023).
Fictional case studies are frequently used in education to discuss issues of depression and anxiety. A case might involve a university student who has complained of depression, disinterest in social activities, and sadness after stressing over school. Students then have to recognise the symptoms, make some tentative diagnoses, and suggest evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioural therapy or counselling. Likewise, a fictional case of panic attack and overthinking can be used to teach learners about anxiety disorders and effective treatment. These can be a safe space for applying clinical knowledge without violation of patient confidentiality (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, 2024).
Mental health case studies will be useful as they link theory, practice and can help to deepen understanding of patient experiences. These cases aim to teach students clinical and interpersonal skills to provide quality mental health care (World Health Organization, 2023).
